THREAD, CONTAINER

c. 1900
Overview

This round green Bakelite ball container is used to hold a ball of yarn. The centre screws to open ball in halves. A hole at the bottom, enables the yarn to flow out. A pale green gros grain ribbon attached to a hole at the top enables this ball to be placed on the wrist to be carried around. Attached to the ribbon is gauge for knitting needles.

Printed top and bottom are the words - PAT.APPLN.No. 23299135

In centre of the knitting needle gauge is the word in cursive writing - Garnite or Garnute or Garnuts. [Could not find reference to this.]

In the mid 18th century and 19th centuries, handwork – knitting, tatting, crochet, needlework - were a drawing room activity, and women used containers to carry their tools as they moved around – or kept them close at hand while they worked. Pockets were not yet a standard item incorporated in skirts, and so other ways were found to hold their tools.
