King George V 'Our Sailor King' tin with hinged lid
c. 1910Colourful metal tin with hinged lid featuring 'Our Sailor King', King George V. The lid has a central image of the King wearing military uniform inside an oval wreath with oak leaves on one side and laurel or olive leaves on the other. The background is sage green in colour.
Around the top of the oval are the words 'Our Sailor King' written in rope. The portrait is in the centre of the red, white and blue Union Jack flag which occupies the entire lid.
On the two widest sides are panoramic images of several warships and a sailing boat. On the ends are images of Queen Mary and the Prince of Wales, both contained in wreaths of flowers or leaves, in front of a background of the sea and ships.
There are darker blue borders above and below the panoramas which show silver grey anchors joined by sections of white rope.
It is believed that this tin was a souvenir of the Royal Review of the British Fleet held in 1910. The fleet of 200 warships arrived in Mount's Bay, Penzance (Cornwall) for a review by King George V. However, a turn in the weather forced the decision to up anchors and set off for a safer bay at Torbay (Devon).
