DARNING, SWEDISH, BAG
c. 1970 - 1979This tote bag, hand embroidered in Swedish darning/weaving technique, also known as Huck Embroidery, was stitched by Life Member Coral Thomas in the early days of the WA Embroiderers’ Guild circa 1970s, being taught by the Guild’s founder, Rusty Walkley. Tote bags very popular at that time.
A darning stitch through the raised threads of this white huckaback fabric in shades of blue.
Huckaback features a special weave, often described as a bird's eye or dobby weave, with long floats (threads that pass over several weft or warp threads) on the surface. This creates a textured, slightly raised pattern on the front.
Huckaback fabric is a popular base for Swedish weaving/darning, a needlework technique where a simple surface darning technique worked over the floats of the weave produces geometric and linear designs.
Cotton Huckaback fabric has been used over the centuries for hand towels because of their absorbency and durability.
