Dirt from Parry Field Baseball Stadium - 1996

Overview

A jar of cut-out dirt from the infield of Parry Field Baseball Stadium, collected in 1996. The ochre-coloured dirt is contained in a square glass jar with a green plastic lid. A label is attached to the outside of the jar describing the contents, where and when it was collected.

Historical information

Parry Field Baseball Stadium, which opened in 1983, was Australia's first international-standard baseball ground. It was built for $1 million and was financed jointly by the Federal and Western Australian governments and the Belmont City Council, in whose area it stood.

Parry Field was named after Kevin Parry, a Western Australian baseball benefactor. Parry was an All-Australian player in 1962 and represented Western Australia a record 74 times.

Parry Field's lighting system, perched on eight 30-metre-high towers, was equal to the best in Australia. The stadium featured an electronic scoreboard controlled from the Press area on top of the administration building.

The field, similar in design to the Tokyo stadium, had sliding cut-outs at home base and at the other three bases and had a fibreglass pitching mound. The artificial infield was designed for continuous play without the normal maintenance costs associated with natural turf.
