Drawings of designs for stained glass windows for St Catherine's Church
1995Eleven pieces of drawing paper with coloured ink drawings and hand-written text. Six pages containing two circles each with a drawing of a plant, along with text. Three pages when joined together show the full length of the window. Two pages contain text relating to research.
When the Anglican Church of St Catherine was built at Central Greenough in 1914, the only stained glass windows were in the east and west walls. The nave had 3 windows either side filled with plain green glass. In the middle 1990s a decision was made to fill these nave windows with stained glass to commemorate local residents. Gary Martin's design was based on the existing windows and incorporated painted circular inserts with images of plants mentioned in the Bible and also found growing at Greenough.

The 12 circular images depict the Olive, Grape, Mulberry, Grass & Clover, Pomegranate, Narcissi & Snowflakes, Fig, Wheat, Almond, Wormwood, Palm and Rose. The text alongside the images is the relevant Biblical quotation.
St Catherine's Anglican Church is an important landmark on the Greenough Flats, and its construction in 1913/14, is evidence that this area was still a thriving agricultural community. These sketches are indications of the affection the church still held for local residents in the late 20th century. Information contained in these documents also provides reasoning about the choice of imagery.
