Overview

B/W copy. Some 55 men roughly grouped in 5 rows in front of brick 2 storey main asylum building with window, door and arched entry. Builder, A.T. Brine, in suit and tie, homburg hat and beard in centre of group. Several other men in suits, many in shirtsleeves and waistcoats and variety of hats and caps. Bush pole scaffolding against the wall and building rubble surrounding group.

Historical information

Claremont Mental Hopsital. 1903 ?? First male patients admitted. Designed by J H Grainger, Public Works Department principal architect. 25 buildings in crescent shape with Montgomery Hall in centre of crescent. Site on Davies Road, 390 acres on Government reserve. Surrounded by farm land which was farmed, with patient involvement, to help feed inmates and those of other government institutions. Accommodation for 85 patients, workshops and stores completed. 1908 official opening. 1938-41 additions of admission and treatment block leased by Military during WWII. Divided in 1972 to become Graylands Hopsital and Swanbourne Hospital.
