PHOTOGRAPH: BUILDING IN PROGRESS, METTERS FACTORY, MARCH 1937

Overview

Black and white photograph showing an incomplete building with corrugated walls and roof. There is a clear panel in the roof in the photographs top centre for natural light. Two chimneys belonging to a house and the apex of a roof can be seen through the buildings windows on the centre left of the photograph. There is a workman standing at a pier in the centre surrounded by several other piers of varying heights. There are five makers stamp labels on the corrugated iron along the back wall. There is the maker's brand 'Lysaght' above a round symbol featuring a man on a horse. The text underneath the label reads 'Guinea Australia.' A date is written in the lower left corner '2-3-37.' Metters factory was situated in Salvado Road on the site which was subsequently occupied by Homebase.
REVERSE: Handwritten in black ink 'Mch [sic] 3rd 1937 ''The Graveyard.''

Historical information

Metters factory was situated in Salvado Road on the site which was subsequently occupied by Homebase.
The trademark stamps on the galvanized iron along the back wall of the photograph are the marks of John Lysaght (Australia) Pty Ltd. Lysaught was founded in 1880 and was a pioneer in modern steel coating technologies (galvanization). The 'Guinea' trademark was a brand of their corrugated iron manufactured in Australia in the 1930s. Lysaght's Guinea, was a second more cost effective alternative to their highest quality product the 'Orb' brand.'
Corrugated iron was an important element the Australian landscape and early architectural style.
