MACHINE EMBROIDERY, DRESS
A fine white toddler’s cotton dress with significant Western Australian provenance. Donated with garments for adults from the Carey family who were prominent in Bunbury in late 19th and early 20th centuries. Carey Park in Bunbury named after Thomas Carey, great grandfather of donor.
Made from the finest white lawn, the bottom section of the skirt has a delicate design of machine embroidery with a scalloped edge. A section of this embroidered design has been used on the front of the bodice. At the chest, the skirt has been gathered by hand with a narrow frill at top edge. 110 mm from the base there is a 10 mm pleat, either to shorten the dress or as an attractive element. Short gathered sleeve. Neck edge and sleeve edges have tatted lace edging. Opening at back with 3 metal press studs.
