Sidney Hinton Memorial Plaque attached to carved timber background
c. 1920Natural timber slab carved with Eucalyptus leaves and buds, possibly Eucalyptus globulus (Tasmanian blue gum). The date 1917 is also carved into the timber slab.
A memorial plaque issued to the next-of-kin of Sidney Hinton is held onto the front of the timber slab with small pieces of metal.
It is circular, made from cast bronze and bears an image of “Britannia” holding a laurel wreath and a trident, with a lion at her feet.
A much smaller lion is below the bigger one, biting the German Imperial eagle.
There is a dolphin on each side of 'Britannia' representing Britain's sea power.
On the right, within a rectangular border, is the name of the person commemorated.
A typewritten passage of writing dated 1987 is glued to the reverse of the timber slab, perhaps alluding to the person who did the carving. - Sarah Squire Todd.
