Shire of Eurobodalla Certificate of Appreciation presented to Robert Constable
c. 1921Original Certificate of Appreciation presented by the Shire Eurobodalla, New South Wales to Private Robert Constable after his return from the Great War.
It was recently framed and has a natural timber frame with a steel blue mat.
The certificate is very colourful and features patriotic motifs such as the flags of the Allies, the floral emblems of Australia and New South Wales, an image of Australian soldiers holding their rifles and bayonets and another of soldiers embarking on a troop ship. The border is in red, white and blue - the colours of the Empire.
There are also patriotic slogans and the dedication appears in the centre of a map of Australia.
Robert Constable was born in Cobargo, New South Wales.
He enlisted, aged 23, with the 6th Reinforcement, 45th Battalion A.I.F. on 27 May 1916, in Kiama. His service number was 2629.
He embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 7 October 1916.
He served in France and was wounded twice.
He commenced his return to Australia on board the hospital ship, HT 'Saxon', on 11 December 1918, and was discharged (medically unfit: gun shot wound, left shoulder), Sydney, 12 March 1919.

At top of certificate is a Rising Sun badge with the writing "ANZAC" beneath it.
Below that is the illustration of the Australian soldiers fighting surrounded by the flags of the Allies, with the inscription below reading "For Liberty and Justice."
Next is the large "Shire of Eurobodalla, New South Wales" inscription and beneath that the dedication:
"'The Shire Council and Residents of the
Shire of Eurobodalla
Hereby place on record their Thanks for and Appreciation
of the conduct of
Robert Constable
who served his King and Country in the Great War of 1914-1919.
In Witness Whereof the Corporate Seal of the
Shire is hereto affixed in the presence of
D. Hutchison President
Les. Jennings Shire Clerk
29 April 1919."
At the bottom of the certificate is the illustration of the troops embarking on a troop ship, There are men, horses and field guns being loaded. This is surrounded by the floral emblems of Australia (wattle) and New South Wales (waratah and flannel flower).
