Ninon Phillips artwork - Infant Health 1
One of a series of four framed artworks about nursing produced by Ninon Phillips (1921-2015).
The frames are painted gold and the mounts are cream. There is an inner frame of gold surrounding the central artwork.
The illustrations are in natural hues of paint with black pen detail added over the top.
This piece depicts a nurse, possibly in an infant health setting, about to bath a baby. The water pitcher is next to her, the large bowl awaits and the soap is in a dish next to it. The baby has been taken from a cot and another baby awaits its turn in the adjacent cot.
Ninon Phillips was born in Hawthorn in 1921. She won a scholarship to Maryborough Technical College and then continued her art studies at Melbourne Technical School. She began her career in textile design around 1936, but became better known for her wildlife and botanical works.
She worked in many different media including silk-screen and textile design, photo tinting, painting and illustration. She exhibited widely in Australia and also in the Tryon Gallery in London.
Her life's passion was caring for both people and wildlife. She worked as a nurse in the 1940's and was Matron of Allendale Private Hospital in Melbourne in the 1960's.
A biography written by the W.I.S.E. (Wildlife in Secure Environment) Trust is attached as a link. Ninon was the founder of this trust and cared for injured wildife for several decades.
