Gosnell's Famora Toilet Soap Wrapper
c. 1900This Famora soap label is wrapper is made of white paper and featured olive-green text. In the centre there is a black and white picture of British actress and singer Marie Studholme (1872-1930) as Lady Famora who is holding a mirror. The text around the image says, GOSNELL’S FAMORA, prepared by the proprietors of CHERRY BLOSSOM, TOILET SOAP. The image has a detailed design around it. Two rectangular text boxes are placed on each side of the image. The text on the left side says: JOHN GOSNELL AND CO., Ltd, HAVE MADE ARRANGEMENTS BY WHICH THEIR SPECIALTIES MAY BE SOLD AT UNIFORM PRICES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED KINGDOM, WHICH RETURN THE RETAILERS A REASONABLE PROFIT ONLY. The text box on the right-side states, JOHN GOSNELL AND CO. Ltd., HAVE THE SOLE RIGHT TO APPLY WORDS CHERRY BLOSSOM, ALSO THE WORD FAMORA TO PERFUMERY AND SOAP. THESES TITLES BEING REGISTERED AS THEIR TRADEMARKS IN THE PRINCIPAL COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD. Famora by John Gosnell and Co. is classified as a fragrance for women and belongs to the Floral Family. W and D Downey is printed on the bottom side of the image; they were the Victorian studio photographers operating in London from 1860s to 1910s.
