BRICK HAND PRESSED

c. 1880
Overview

Rectangle hand pressed clay clinker brick red in colour. Frog pressed into top side. One end damaged and missing corners and bottom edge.

Historical information

A hand pressed brick made from clay. Believed to have been made in the Kelmscott area sometime before 1900 and probably used in a domestic dwelling. Kelmscott had a number of back yard clay pits. The clay was then pressed into moulds using hand powered brick presses. The bricks were then stacked and an earth and wood kiln built over the bricks and fired for several days until the bricks were hard.

Statement of significance

Brickmaking has been an important industry within the City of Armadale from the early to mid 1800s to today. It started with families making hand pressed bricks from locally sourced clay for homes and community buildings. In the late 1890s and early 1900s commercial production of machine made bricks started and soon the district was supplying bricks for the entire state.
The brick is part of a collection of local bricks that represent how brick making has evolved within the district from hand made to automated machine made.
