pair of hand painted ceramic vases

Historical information

This pair of vases with views of Windsor Castle and Haddon Hall painted by L. Reid was a wedding gift from Charles Crowther Maley MP to Cecil Maley and Genevieve Howard. The couple were married at Three Springs on 7 November 1927.

Cecil Morrison Maley (1902-1985) was the son of John Morrison and Ethel Maley (nee Clinch) and was born at Greenough. He worked as a farmhand, then farmer at Three Springs.

Genevieve Howard (1905-2005) was the daughter of William James and Sarah Jane Howard (nee Pascoe). She grew up on Plainfield Farm in Three Springs.

After their marriage, the couple moved into a small weatherboard cottage on a farm where life was tough and very basic. They were to have seven children.

Contextual Information

The museum does have other wedding gifts to the Maley family in the collection. Like the Ethel Maley silverware (GMOBs 0477-0479), these mantle vases are status symbol gifts, designed to impress.
Although these vases were first owned by a third generation of the Maley family, who lived in Three Springs, they still have a connection through being gifted by Charles Crowther Maley who was born in this house.

They are representative of souvenirs from the ‘Mother Country,” a place neither the giver nor the recipients visited.
