Historical information

This platter was made by William Fairbairns, of Hanley, North Staffordshire, between 1863-65. Purchased by John Patience for use at Rock of Ages Farm, Greenough, probably from Maley's Store (just across the road from his residence). The donor can remember his grandmother Blanche Harrison using the platter to serve meat.

Contextual Information

This platter can be seen as a sign of ‘gentrification’. Living standards were improving at Greenough, especially for a former convict like John Patience. This make of crockery was very popular at Greenough as seen by numerous fragments scattered through out the region.
