PHOTOGRAPH: ST JOSEPH'S GIRLS' ORPHANAGE AND SCHOOL, SUBIACO (FORMER BENEDICTINE MONASTERY)

c. 1900
Overview

Black and white photograph shows the St Joseph's Girls' Orphanage and School with its verandahs and dormer windows. This was formerly the monastery built by the Benedictines in the 1850s at the settlement, which they called 'New Subiaco'.
The chapel on the right was built by the Sisters of Mercy when they took over the orphanage. An olive tree planted by the monks is visible next to the church. There are five nuns standing on the left in their habits. The girls are wearing pinafores and hats. The orphanage building was destroyed in the 1970's, but the chapel is still standing. It forms part of the Catherine McAuley Centre.
