Overview

Postcard is rectangular in shape and has a black and white photo of Illumination of Les Halles de Ypres. At the front of the building are 5 cars parked with a car in the street. There are also 2 cars parked at the taxi stand. The edging of the card is rippled all way round. At the back of the card is a letter written in French to Mi. L. KNOX/80 DAGRES ROAD,BO/FOREST HILL,/LONDON S.E. 23/ENGLAND underlined twice. At top right hand corner is stamp with BELGIE-BELGIQUE/2'50 on each corner of the stamp. The stamp is orange with photo of a man. Edging of stamp is rippled. The stamp has been franked with a black round stamp with IEPER -2-7-55.19 AA on each side of date. Several dots.
The wording of the note has been deciphered into English as: Dear Madame/I wish you a happy birthday and I hope that all the family are in good health. I spent a few days at Cosyde (Koksijde)/but it was sad without you all. Nevertheless Jeanne went out every day. The children were kept entertained and are/on holidays the following week./Little(child's name) isn't walking yet, but was content at the beach looking at the sea. How is XXX(Tady? Pet or/ person's name) new treatment? How are Lucie and Jean. Maurice is very busy at work at present. He also sends his/best wishes for your birthday. Kisses from us all. Jeanne sends her regards to everyone./Zoe & Maurice/Dear Mummy/I wish you an equally happy birthday and hope that everything is well with you all. (unable to make out name). Historical information

Postcard sent to Lucy Knox for her birthday, possibly from French or Belgium relatives when she was living in England.
Lucy was born in 1927 to Leonard and Berthe (nee Brel, Berthe was born in France) and grew up in the Belgium city of Ypres where her parents ran a hotel and conducted tours of Word War One battle sites and cemeteries, mainly for British tourists. The family moved to England sometime in the mid to late 1940s. In the late 1950s Lucy went on a world trip stopping in Kenya and Perth where where she me Englishman Peter James Denholm, who she married in 1960. The pair settled in Western Australia and started a family. In the 1960s the family spent time farming in the Busselton, Greenhills and Dandaragin areas before settling in the Byford area.
