Historical information

'Gran Fondo' is an Italian term that loosely translates to "Big Ride". They are mass participation cycling events that started in Cesebatico, Italy in 1970 and became incredibly popular around the world. In 2016, the City of Armadale hosted a Gran Fondo that traversed through the city's hills and plains. Participants left from the Event Village in Jull Street Mall to ride the signature event - Blackchrome Gran Fondo - covering 100km. The first City of Armadale Grand Fondo was held in 2010 and was the first Grand Fondo held in Western Austrlaia.

Statement of significance

The City of Armadale has had a long association with cycling. Since the 1890s, cycling clubs would venture out to the district, often stopping at the Narrogin Inn for refreshments. In the late 1800s and early 1900s cyclists would pass through the district as they attempted to ride the decaying road to Albany. Cycling clubs and groups continue to visit the district today either enjoying a leisurely ride on the plains or more challenging rides through the hills.
