Historical information

It is believed that this is a photograph of Mrs Isabella Livingston (nee McArthur), wife of Malcolm Livingston and mother of Jessie, Margurette Rose, Agnes E and John (Jack) McArthur Livingston. The family moved from the Fremantle area to Bedfordale some time between 1898 and 1903 to start an orchard in Bedfordale. Malcolm and his son John worked on the orchard until 1916 when John enlisted with the 11th Battalion and went to France to serve in World War One. In April 1917 he was captured by German forces and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war, returning to his family in 1919. Back home the family continued to work on the orchard and Malcolm played a role in the construction of the Armadale Obelisk in 1916.
Little is known about Isabella outside of her working on the orchard, raising her family and regularly entering baked good and flower arrangements in the Bedfordale Show. In 1911 Isabella edged out Mrs Waters for the first prize for her baked scones.
