First World War Black and White Photograph of Mohammed Ali Mosque Cairo

1917 - 1919
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing the courtyard of a Mosque. In the center of the image is an ornate rotunda style building that is covering another ornate structure which appears to be a well. Behind the “rotunda” is one-side of the mosque showing four domes, several arches with columns and a tall tower. There are numerous windows on the face of the mosque and its domes. The image is blurred in both top and bottom corners, and the bottom has a bright patch where the image hasn’t developed. There is a white border surrounding the image. The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription. There are several small stains on the card.

Historical information

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali was built by Muhammad Ali Pasha in 1848 AD. This mosque is known as the "Alabaster Mosque", in reference to its marble panelling on its interior and exterior walls.
