Subcollections
Overview

Watercolour, ink and gouache of SS Maitland. The colours in vary in shades of grey, showing the Maitland steaming towards the artist. She has two masts from which derricks are rigged in preparation for working cargo. Smoke is blowing to the RH side of the picture from a tall vertical funnel. A man is standing on the starboard side of the bridge looking to seaward. The ship is equipped with two lifeboats in radial davits aft of the bridge, but she also has a boat with the name "MAILAND" stowed on top of the starboard side of the for'd cargo hatch. A company house flag is flying at the after masthead, as well as a large ensign from the ensign staff, which is visible over the port lifeboat.
In the background is the Vancouver Peninsular on the far side of Princess Royal Harbour, with the Albany deep-water jetty shown mid-field left. The sea is calm, and the artist gives the impression of being on the Albany Town Jetty waiting for the MAITLAND to berth.
