Overview

Framed memorial to Walter Charles Hartwig.
Outer frame made from decorative natural timber with inner frame of gold painted timber. Central area in black and gold containing portrait and inscription, surrounded by painted depictions of the flags of the Allies (Australia, Belgium, Japan, United States, France and United Kingdom), colour patch of the 3rd Battalion A.I.F. and an inscription of his name and unit.

Historical information

Walter Charles Hartwig was born in Moorwatha, New South Wales.
He enlisted, aged 26, on 26 October 1916 with the 23rd Reinforcement of the 3rd Battalion, A.I.F. - service number 7012.
He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A24 Benalla on 9 November 1916. He died of wounds on 19 September 1918 in Peronne, France.
He is buried in the Doingt Communal Cemetery Extension in France.
