Overview

Gothic style, random stone church with dressed stone quoins and buttresses, and shingled roof. Bell tower has crenellated parapet. Heap of stone in left foreground suggests recent completion of building, the surrounds of which are devoid of paths, garden etc. Post and rail fence and natural bush in background.

Historical information

St John’s Anglican Church and Parish Hall is sited on elevated land on the northern end of the town of Northam.

The church and hall are impressive stone buildings, constructed of random laid local stone. The church has a distinctive stone bell tower topped by a battlement. Both church and hall have the narrow pointed windows and buttresses associated with Gothic architecture. Inside, the church is renowned for their outstanding timber ceilings and roof truss systems. The church also has excellent stained glass windows.

The church was constructed in 1890 and the hall in 1897.

Australian social history from the collection of photographs and albums donated to the museum by Raymond Sharkey's family.

Raymond John Sharkey an architect, surveyor and amateur photographer was born in 1868 in New South Wales. Raymond was a Claremont resident when he died at an early age.
