Burt lists his achievements in the public service life of the Leeward Islands including serving as Attorney General in St Kitts for ten years. He mentions being ineligible to take up locally offered positions of advancement - in spite of strong recommendations by persons in authority - because he had practiced law in both St Kitts and Jamaica. Contextual Information

This letter is of historical interest showing AP Burt's increasing frustration with the stagnation of his career in the West Indies due to the limited opportunities for professional advancement. He indicated he would now be willing to travel anywhere in the British Empire to follow a promotion to the Bench. The document is complete and is in original condition. The letter also provides information about Burt's career before he arrived in Western Australia, adding to its research value.
Burt went on to become a key figure in the development of law in the English tradition in Western Australia and so documents associated with his earlier legal career are of great interest in understanding his actions and motivations in this area in later years.
