1859Letter acknowledging Archibald Paull Burt's application for Chief Justice of Hong Kong. Advising that this position is not yet vacant but should it be so in the future his application would not fail to be considered together with those of other candidates. Dated 31 July 1859. Handwritten on one sheet of cream paper, folded in half vertically.

This letter is an acknowledgment of the receipt by the Colonial Office of an enquiry made by Archibald Paull Burt about promotion to the office of Chief Justice of Hong Kong.
Burt's letter about the Hong Kong position was written a month after his letter of the 21 June 1859 to the Colonial Office (OCHLM 1976.36a,b) when he indicated he was now actively seeking professional advancement.
This letter is of historical interest showing a part of the process by which Burt was seeking to progress his career which eventually led him to Western Australia 18 months later.
