This shield was awarded to winners of the Mary Durack Writers Award. The award was named after Mary Durack, a successful Western Australian author who played a large part to promote writing in the state.
The award was held by the City of Armadale, City of Swan, Shire of Kalamunda, and the Shire of Mundaring from 1979-2007 to recognise and support creative writing in those areas. This award is symbolic of the strength of the culture and the arts in the COA during the 1980s- early 2000s
