BRAY, JAMES AND ABIGAIL

c. 1880
Overview

B//W Prints of studio portraits. (a) James Bray with thick, dark, receding hair, full moustache and steadfast gaze is posed with one arm on the back of an ornate chair and the other bent to place his thumb in a trouser, pulling back his single-buttoned jacket to reveal a lighter, buttoned waistcoat. One knee is bent and his trousers partly cover shiny boots. (b) Abigail Bray is dressed in a typical Victorian outfit: full skirt, tight-fitting, buttoned bodice with high neck, dropped shoulders and long sleeves, with white collar and false sleeve visible at the wrists. She wears a tight, shaped belt and the outfit is trimmed with braid and ruffles. Her dark hair is parted in the centre and she is posed with one hand on the back of an ornate chair.
