Protea

1998
Overview

Acquired by the City of Gosnells from City of Gosnells Rotary Art Award in 1998.

Vertical decorative artwork depicting native flowering plant forms arranged in a tall, narrow composition on a white background. The design consists of stylised botanical elements rendered in a mosaic-like or geometric technique, with leaves and flowers constructed from numerous angular segments outlined by fine pale borders.

At the top and bottom of the composition are star-shaped flowers with cream, yellow, red and orange petals. The upper section includes a hanging flower head composed of a dense cluster of red-orange stamens suspended beneath green foliage. The central section features a large circular flower resembling a banksia or protea bloom, incorporating red-orange, cream and brown tones radiating from a detailed centre. Below the central flower is a second cup-shaped flower head with prominent red-orange stamens emerging from a rounded floral base. Clusters of seed pods and buds are distributed throughout the design.

Foliage occupies most of the composition and consists of numerous green and grey-green leaves of varying shapes and sizes, arranged around the flowers in a symmetrical vertical pattern. Colours include shades of green, grey-green, cream, white, red, orange, brown and yellow. The artwork is executed in a highly decorative, stylised manner emphasising pattern, texture and geometric form.
