The March
1992Acquired by the City of Gosnells in 1992
Vertical rectangular artwork depicting a densely populated urban streetscape viewed from an elevated perspective. The composition is orientated vertically and framed by two tall multi-storey buildings that extend along the left and right sides of the image. The buildings are rendered in dark tones of black, grey, brown and blue, with rows of windows and architectural details creating strong vertical lines.
Between the buildings, a narrow street recedes into the distance towards a pale, light-filled area near the top centre of the composition. The central street is filled with a large crowd represented by numerous small, dark figures occupying almost the entire width and length of the roadway. The crowd appears as a continuous mass extending from the foreground into the far distance, emphasising depth and scale.
The artwork makes extensive use of perspective, with the buildings converging towards a central vanishing point. Strong contrasts between the dark buildings and the lighter sky and distant background create a sense of enclosure and height. Colours are predominantly dark blue, black, grey and brown, with lighter blue-grey tones visible in the distant background. The surface exhibits fine linear detail and layered tonal variations characteristic of a painted or printed urban scene.
