The Plain of Man
2005Acquired by the City of Gosnells from the Liddelow Homestead Spring Art Exhibition in 2005
Abstract landscape painting executed in earthy red, brown, cream, blue and mauve tones. The composition presents a stylised landscape formed from broad, undulating bands of colour and textured surfaces. The foreground and lower portion of the image consist of layered reddish-brown and dark brown landforms with black linear outlines defining contours and shapes.
Across the centre of the composition, a pale cream-coloured sinuous shape resembling a watercourse or valley winds through the landscape. Scattered throughout this central area are numerous rounded blue forms outlined in dark lines. On the left side, a large dark red-brown hill or landmass occupies a significant portion of the middle ground. Additional geometric and rectangular forms are integrated into the landscape, creating a semi-abstract appearance.
The upper section of the painting is dominated by a textured pale mauve, grey and off-white sky. Two circular red forms are suspended within this area, one larger and one smaller. Near the upper right corner, a larger mottled orange-brown circular form appears against a textured gold and cream background panel.
The painting incorporates heavily textured surfaces, layered pigments and visible brushwork. Strong black contour lines divide many elements of the composition, enhancing the abstract and symbolic qualities of the work. Dominant colours include deep red, rust, brown, cream, blue, mauve, grey, gold and black.
