Ambush
1998Acquired by the City of Gosnells from the Liddelow Homestead Spring Art Exhibition in 1998.
Three-dimensional sculpture depicting a spotted feline predator moving through dense vegetation. The animal is shown in a crouched, stalking posture with its head lowered toward the ground, front legs bent, hindquarters raised slightly, and a long tail curving upward and to the right. The body is covered with numerous dark spots and markings distributed across a grey-brown surface.
The sculpture is mounted on a rectangular base textured to resemble natural ground. Surrounding the animal are stylised plant forms, including upright reeds, grasses and vertical stems rising behind and around the figure. The vegetation is constructed from thin, elongated elements with pointed ends and varying heights, creating a sense of enclosure and concealment.
The work appears to be made from a glazed ceramic or similarly fired material. Surfaces have a glossy finish that reflects light. Colours are predominantly grey, brown, tan and black, with darker tones defining the animal's spotted coat and recesses within the vegetation. Visible textural marks, impressed patterns and hand-worked details contribute to the overall surface character.
The composition emphasises movement and tension, with the animal partially obscured by the surrounding vegetation and positioned as though advancing through a wetland or bush environment.
