Baroque Banksia
1996Acquired by the City of Gosnells in 1996 for $690.
Botanical artwork depicting a flowering banksia branch against a pale blue and white background. The composition is dominated by a single woody branch extending diagonally from the lower right toward the upper left of the image. Attached to the branch are numerous elongated, serrated leaves that curl and twist in various directions. The leaves are rendered in shades of green, olive, yellow-green, purple and brown, with finely detailed veins and spiny margins.
At the upper left of the composition is a large cylindrical flower spike characteristic of a banksia. The flower head is densely covered with fine tubular florets and is coloured in soft yellow, cream, gold and pale orange tones. Near the centre-right of the composition is a cluster of mature woody seed pods embedded within a rough-textured cone. The pods are open, revealing dark brown to black interiors surrounded by reddish-brown and grey fibrous textures.
The branch is coloured in shades of brown, pink, mauve and grey, with detailed texturing suggesting bark and growth nodes. Additional fine foliage and flower structures extend from the branch, creating an intricate network of curved forms throughout the composition.
The artwork is highly detailed and naturalistic, emphasising the textures, shapes and structure of the plant. Colours include pale blue, cream, gold, yellow, green, olive, brown, red-brown, mauve, purple and grey. The background is largely unadorned, allowing the botanical subject to stand out prominently.
