WHEELBARROW: HANDMADE WOODEN FRAME HEAVILY WEATHERED CONDITION
c. 1905The wheelbarrow base made from wooden weathered boards next to one another. Reinforced at the sides and protruding out from the frontage two wooden stakes [the handles] tapering towards the end. On a right angle from the base at back are two boards forming a trapezium shape. Across the width of them is a thin narrow wire. The back can be removed and the edges rest against the ledge attached to both the edges of the side pieces which are attached to the base in a sloping fashion. They consist of two boards. The entire back part rests on a rectangular wooden stake with a spoked iron wheel attached to each side of it. The front part rests on two wooden stakes attached at each side of the wheelbarrow and has metal cross studs as reinforcements.
This handmade wooden wheelbarrow was used by a local Subiaco family as a practical household tool for transporting heavy or awkward items.
Circa 1905. The wheelbarrow came into the collection during the demolition of a home in Finlayson Street Subiaco.
