FONT: ST HUGH'S BAPTISMAL FONT

Overview

Baptismal font from St Hugh's Church, Jolimont.

French polished wooden font with large shell. Octagonal base tapers in different layers of wood towards an octagonal column. The base rests on eight small wooden feet. Attached to the column a copper plate which bears impressed 'To the Glory of God. Presented by Mesdames Crockett &. Cook. Shell (presented) by Miss Monger, 1916.' (Frank Crockett - Carpenter). Column slightly widens and resting on it another octagonal shaped box-like wooden device with eight panels. Every other panel has a circular hollow with embossed wooden design. Centre top surface has four small octagonal columns on which the apricot and white baler shell rests.

Historical information

The maker, Frank Joseph Crockett, lived at 36 Cardigan Terrace, Jolimont from 1911-1916 next to grocery and bottle shop. He then built at 5 Lansdowne St, Jolimont.
