ROOM 1.26 Kitchen
c. 1944Room 26 in the Old Butter Factor was added above Room 16 as a butter paper store room as part of the reconstruction works after the May 1944 fire.
The walls and ceiling of Room 26 have fibrous cement and batten cladding, some areas of which have been patched with metal sheets.
Along the eastern wall there is a low boxed in area that forms a deep, narrow recess in the ceiling Room 16 below. This is the location of the original 1918 external stair that was used to access the upstairs rooms. The evidence indicates that the stair was retained when Room 26 was constructed but removed at a later unknown date.
There is evidence that this room was once lined with galvanised flat iron which has since mostly been removed. A former manager said that this was to make the room rat proof, suggesting edible products of some sort were once stored here.
The Busselton Historical Society now call this the Kitchen room and the displays showcase kitchen artefacts that date back to the early settlement times.
