Historical information

In June 2010, the Australian Masters Rowing championship was held at Champion Lakes. This was the first national rowing regatta held at the new venue. Albert McNamara was invited to do the Welcome to Country at the opening ceremony and was presented with this medal held in this box for doing this.

Statement of significance

This object is part of a collection associated with significant event that occurred within the City of Armadale. The Australian Master's Rowing Championship was the first national event held at the recently opened Champion Lakes Regatta Centre, a 30 million dollar constructed lake built primarily for rowing sports. The venue was built to international competition standards so it could attract both national and international events. Local elder Albert McNamara provided the first welcome to country at the event for a national competition.
