Historical information

The idea of rationing petrol in Australia was first floated around 1939 but didn’t come into effect until late 1940. After receiving pressure from the British Government to reduce petrol consumption The Australian Government set about trying to decipher ways to introduce rationing given that all supplies were imported and only minimal storage facilities existed. Coal fired gas producers were an alternative but were found to be inefficient and cumbersome. In 1949 a High Court decision was influential in ending rationing temporarily after chaos ensued. However it resumed several months later until eventually being abolished permanently in 1950.
