Enlisting in the AIF in 1915 initially with the 11th Battalion he was transferred to the 28th Battalion within months serving in various theatres of war including Gallipoli and France. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in 1917 and returned to Australia in 1919.
He enrolled again for service in 1940 reducing his age to be accepted and was posted to the 2/7th Field Ambulance. In Greece his valour for bravery under fire was recognized for which he was awarded a Military Medal.
