KITCHEN CABINET: GREEN PAINTED WITH LEADLIGHT GLASS
c. 1940Kitchen cabinet ("Kitchenette") with Art Deco design characteristics, painted green, with two drawers (presumably for cutlery) with Bakelite and metal handles: one cupboard for bread; two cupboards underneath above; two equal sized cupboards on right hand side - the top one with flywire on side; two clear glass sliding glass doors with leadlight style decoration covering three shelves (for storage of kitchen crockery). Patterned 'contact' plastic on middle shelf and in cupboards. Metal fasteners with lever action on cupboards.
This kitchen cabinet was used in the kitchen of Mr and Mrs Con Kalaf at 440 Barker Road, Subiaco, from c.1940 to 2000. Con Kalaf was a baker at 99 Railway Road and was one of ten children whose family came to Australia from Kastellorizo, an island in Greece.
The cabinet displays art deco design characteristics, particularly in the clear glass leadlight doors. Zinc is used in place of lead which was required for munitions during the war.
The compartments most frequently used can be determined by the pattern of wear. A later chapter in the life story is the use of plastic contact to line the shelves (circa 1970s)
