Historical information

A certificate of appreciation from the Ministry for Education congratulating the Karragullen Puffineers. Its date being on 25th of September 1987 was not long before the Puffin Club would cease.

The Puffin Club was a children's club founded by the then editor of Puffin Books Kaye Webb in 1967 as a method to improve children's literacy as well as a marketing vehicle to promote new books.

Members of the club would be called Puffineers. As part of their membership a newsletter called the Puffin Post would be mailed out that included puzzles, quizes, stories, and tips to crack codes in new books.

The Puffin Book Club would issue its final publication in 1989.

Karragullen Primary School started in 1891 by the Canning Sawmill for the children of its employees. In 1913 the state school was opened at Illawarra Orchard. In 1920 the school was moved to Brookton Highway to be closer to where families were establishing new orchards.

Due to falling student numbers the school was closed at the end of 1999. After the closure children in the area would attend schools in Roleystone.
