PHOTOGRAPH: ST. ALOYSIUS CONVENT SCHOOL, HENRY STREET, SHENTON PARK

c. 1907
Overview

The black and white photograph features St. Aloysius Convent School, its name clearly visible across the façade. The church is built of brick, with a porch, arched front door and pediment. There is a window on either side of the entrance. The roof is made of corrugated iron.
St. Joseph's parish priest, Father (later Monsignor) Verling stands at the open front gate of the picket fence. He had this church built in 1907 in the area which was then known as 'Rosalie'. It opened as a school in 1908, staffed by St. John of God Sisters who remained in charge until Easter 1912, when the Sisters of Mercy took over.
Additions were made in 1925. In spite of these changes, the original façade is still clearly recognisable. It remained in use as a Roman Catholic church until 1962, when the new church opened nearby. It remained a Roman Catholic School until 1973, after which it had different functions, such as offices of the Roman Catholic Education Commission.
From 1983 to 1991, it was leased to Quintillian School. At present, the Montessori School occupies the premises.
2014. This building was converted into a private dwelling about 2006/7.
Note: The above history/information was supplied by Father Holmes, parish priest.
