STIRLING TERRACE, TOODYAY

1920
Subcollections
Overview

A large clear black and white photo of the main street (Stirling Terrace) of Toodyay.
It is taken showing the corner of Clinton Street (now Piesse Street) on the right.
There are telephone poles either side of the road.
The pole closest to the left is advertising Keith Kennedy. Other poles are seen further up as are many trees which shade the unseen shop fronts.
To the lower end of the photo is a picket fence, a house and a corrugated iron building.
To the right across the street a woman in a long skirt, jacket and hat is standing outside a shop window of the former Donegan's Store.

Historical information

The Kennedy Entertainers visited Toodyay in August 1920 and presented a program of vocal, instrumental and vaudeville items. The show was headlined by Keith Kennedy, a violinist, and was held at the Toodyay Town Hall (now known as the Toodyay Memorial Hall).

The corner shops where the woman is standing were originally established during the 1880s. By 1902 they were known as Donegan's Store. By 1906 the store had changed its name to the Newcastle Trading Company. The buildings were finally demolished in the 1950s and a garage was built. The garage was, in turn, removed during the 1970s.
