TEACHER AND PUPILS OUTSIDE BEJOORDING SCHOOL

Overview

A large faded black and white photo copy print of 23 young boys and girls and their female teacher who is dressed in ankle length skirt and a long sleeved high necked blouse over which is a necklace.
The girls are wearing frocks, aprons, socks and lace up boots and one little one has bare feet as do 3 of the boys who are mostly dressed in knickerbockers, shirts, jackets, socks and lace-up boots.
Two boys have braces and no jackets.
Behind all is a side of the school building, both brick and corrugated iron, in which are two door openings.

Historical information

In 1869 a private school was established on the Syred property in Tenth Road, Bejoording (owned by William Edward Syred and Frances Syred, nee Martin), in a mud-bat classroom constructed for the purpose.
In 1872 the school became a public school managed by the Central Board of Education and in 1875 closed.

The Syred family employed ticket of leave men as teachers and farm labourers.
