BILL SORRELL

This photograph of Bill was taken at his home in Drummond Street, Toodyay.
Bill Sorrell was born in Coolgardie in 1910. He was employed by the Western Australian Government Railways as a Guard. Bill was forced into early retirement from the railways by a shunting accident which left him partially paralysed.
Bill moved to Toodyay in 1952 and died of natural causes on December 21, 1987.
He is confirmed as being employed by the WAGR (Western Australian Government Railways) in Kalgoorlie as a porter in 1943, with Midland shunting staff in 1946, then in 1949 at Kondinin, at Wongan Hills in 1954, and at Toodyay as a guard in 1958, 1963, 1968, 1972, 1977.( His address for the period of 1958-1983 was c/- Railways, Toodyay.)

Bill used a paintbrush attached to his walking stick to decorate his Toodyay house, taking 14 years to complete the project. He was known for writing poetry and placing poetic eulogies in newspapers at his own expense for people he knew who had died.
