Contextual Information

William Stevens arrived in the colony in the 1860s with his family and settled at St Anne's on the Avon River. Despite being washed out by the 1872 floods he prospered enough to build this house in 1875. His son Albert Stevens subsequently went into partnership with W Bull at 'Avondale', one of the largest vineyards in the state at the time. The youngest Stevens son, George, joined the Telegraph Office in 1874, aged 12, and rose to the highest ranks of the department over the years.
