Overview

A faded coloured photo of one of Toodyay's oldest homes situated at Lot S30, Folewood Road.
It has 3 tall brick chimneys coming through a corrugated iron roof.
The building is of brick work and cream rendered. A white picket fence is in the foreground to the left and right of which, are trees & shrubbery.
Part of a roadway is to the left with an open picket gate. A wireless mast is on the horizon. A sign on the corner of the house reads "The Cascades. W. Graham."

Historical information

The date of this photograph is unknown.
The house was built and named by Anglican minister Rev. William Hugh Pidcock in 1875 (Old Toodyay and Newcastle, p.264-265)
Accounts indicate that when he left in 1882 he sold Cascades to the Anglican diocese for considerably less than its overall cost. It was later sold in 1900 with the house being rented.(from article authored by Robyn Taylor, Toodyay Herald p.18, November 2021)

Contextual Information

The Cascades' has historic value for its associations with the Anglican Church and Rev. Pidcock for whom the house was built.
The place has aesthetic value as an authentic example of building type and construction in the 1870s and for its contribution to the streetscape of Toodyay. Rev. Pidcock lived there until 1882 when Rev. T.H. Friel arrived. During this time a farmlet with pigs, cattle and poultry was developed.
After1903 the rectory relocated to another property.
