Laying of the Mechanic's Institute Foundation Stone
1896A black and white photograph of a crowd of women, children and men dressed formally, with the man in the centre of the picture standing in front of a stone plaque. The photograph is stuck onto light brown cardboard which has a floral decoration in each corner and is framed in a narrow light brown decorative frame.
The man in the centre of the photograph is Mr F.H. Piesse laying the foundation stone of the Mechanic's Institute in 1896 in Austral Terrace. One room in the building was reserved for the Mechanic's Institute meetings, in 1987 it was a private snooker club.

On the back of the photograph is written "Nixon & Merrilees"
