Wound dressing packets x 2

a) Shell wound packet. White thick paper square packet which contains wound dressings. Paper stained and damaged on all surfaces. Manufactured by Davis Company Inc. New York USA. 1940-45

b) First aid field dressing. Bandage in fabric packet with twist of greased paper attached. Manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, Sydney, July 1942. On the front are printed instructions to open and use the bandage, including a red diagonal arrow to indicate opening direction. Contains a bandage and gauze pad.

Historical information

Donor Esma/Esme Berryman (born 1923) was the daughter of Alice Matilda Markey (nee Chitty) and William James Markey, so the badge is likely to have some connection with a member of one of these two local Toodyay families.

b) Printed on the front of the package: ‘FIRST FIELD DRESSING / Tear apart the uncemented corner as indicated / by the arrow and remove the paper. / Take the folded ends of the bandage in each / hand, and, keeping the bandage taut, apply the / gauze pad to the wound, and fix the bandage. / In the case of head wounds when respirators have / to be worn, care should be taken to adjust the pad / so that it does not interfere with the fit of the face / piece. / DO NOT HANDLE THE GAUZE OR WOUND / Johnston & Johnson / PTY.
