NEW ZEALAND REINFORCEMENT BADGE, WW1, D COY 10TH
1916Metal badge in a circular fern wreath design, the letter R is resting on the point where the stems of the two laurel leaves cross at the base, with the letter N centered on the left laurel, with the letter Z centered on the right laurel. The N & Z represents New Zealand and the R is assumed to represent Reinforcement.
The large lettering incorporated into centre of the design is D over 10. This represents D Company 10th Reinforcements (Otago)
There are two metal loops on the reverse.
The soldier that wore this badge was a part of the 10th reinforcement of troops sent to the First New Zealand Expeditionary Force of the 1914-1918 War, which departed New Zealand on 4 March 1916.
These reinforcements were the 4th specifically directed to the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the NZ Rifle Brigade.
Donor, Esma/Esme Berryman (born 1923) was the daughter of Alice Matilda Markey (nee Chitty) and William James Markey, so the badge possibly has some connection with a member of one of these two local Toodyay families.

New Zealand's Reinforcement badges were all unofficial but accepted.
They had to be privately purchased and were worn only during training.
They came in a variety of styles.
Mostly the standard cap and collar badges were worn, but some soldiers selected other badges.
These badges were usually only worn by reinforcements for the major branches of service: Infantry, Mounted Rifles and Rifle Brigade.
