Overview

A black cloth patch with felt backing and two (2) khaki brown chevrons signifying the rank of Corporal with an embroidered letter “T” that have been stitched onto the backing. The ‘T’
signifies that the wearer had ‘special’ technical skills.

Historical information

A Corporal was the lowest ranked Non-Commissioned Officer in the Army of the United States of America in the Second World War. A wide range of soldiers possessed specialised skills and were allocated “specific duties of a technical or administrative nature” (Army Circular Nº 204, War Department, Washington, 24 June 1942). Mechanics, tank drivers, cooks, radio operators, repairmen, medics and mail clerks were included in this category. ‘Technical’ N.C.O’s were not trained in leadership and were not combat leaders. In November 1943 the NCO status for technicians was revoked.

Contextual information

This item was souvenired by Sapper Kingsley Charles MOHR (WX26433), who enlisted at Guildford on 9 August 1941. A Sapper in the Australian Mechanical Equipment Company he spent 1495 days on Active Service in Australia and 625 days on Overseas Service from September 1943 – August 1944 and 10 March – 6 December 1945 before being discharged at Karrakatta in Western Australia on 24 January 1946. MOHR had lived in Denmark, Western Australia, before enlisting and returned there after the war.
